A 70-run unfinished partnership for the seventh wicket between Sujit Lenka and Bibhudutta Panda enabled Odisha draw their opening Elite Group-C League match against Uttar Pradesh in the Col C K Nayudu Trophy (U-25) Tournament at Mirzapur today. But host UP secured three points by virtue of taking 141-run first innings lead in the four-day match, while Odisha settled with one point.
Needing 142 runs to avoid innings defeat, Odisha were in deep trouble after being reduced to 94 for six in the second innings. But gritty batting by Lenka, who missed a century by one run in the first innings, and Panda saved the visitors from further damage. When both the captains agreed for the draw, Odisha were 164 for six with Lenka and Panda unbeaten on 38 runs apiece.
Earlier resuming their first innings at the overnight score of 373 for three, UP added another 123 runs for the loss of three wickets before declaring at 497 for six. Opener D Rawat, who completed a double century on the penultimate day, was finally castled by Panda for a majestic 266. Odisha would next meet Andhra from November 15 to 18.
